The two clutch sets control odd and even gears, respectively. Before a shift, the system pre-engages the next gear. Once a shift command is received, the DCT quickly sends a command to the engine to increase its RPM. At this point, the previously engaged gear quickly connects, while the first clutch set fully disengages, completing an upshift.

This cycle repeats, making gear changes extremely fast and smooth, with virtually no interruption in power delivery. Because it does not use a torque converter, the engine's power can be fully utilized, resulting in less power loss and a fuel consumption reduction of over 10%.
