Bushings are designed to reduce friction and wear during shaft movement. Their fundamental purpose is similar to that of bearings, but they offer a lower cost alternative. Despite higher frictional resistance, they are only suitable for certain components.

Bushings are typically made of copper, but plastic versions also exist. Bushings are usually positioned between the shaft and the supporting structure, fitting very tightly against the supporting structure, allowing only the shaft to rotate within the bushing. During the assembly of the shaft and bushing, lubricant is added to reduce the friction generated during rotation.
