An independent suspension system allows each wheel to be independently suspended from the chassis or body via an elastic suspension system, thus offering numerous advantages. Its benefits include:
lightweight design, reduced impact on the vehicle body, improved wheel ground adhesion; the use of softer springs to enhance vehicle comfort; it can lower the engine position, reduce the vehicle's center of gravity, and improve driving stability; left and right wheels move independently, without mutual interference, which can reduce body roll and vibration. However, independent suspension systems also have some drawbacks, such as complex structure, high cost, and inconvenient maintenance. Additionally, the complex structure can occupy some interior passenger space.
Passenger cars typically use independent suspension systems. Depending on their structural form, independent suspension systems can be further categorized into wishbone, trailing arm, multi-link, swing axle, and MacPherson strut suspension systems, among others.
