Advantages and Disadvantages of CVT Transmissions

Without the gears of a traditional automatic transmission, the shifting process of an automatic transmission also disappears. Therefore, the power output of a CVT transmission is linear and very smooth in actual driving.

• Theoretically, a CVT's transmission system can have an infinite number of gear ratios, allowing for more freedom in gear setting. The balance between gear ratios, speed ratios, performance, fuel consumption, and exhaust emissions in traditional transmission systems is easier to achieve with a CVT. • The mechanical efficiency and fuel economy of CVT transmissions are significantly superior to conventional automatic transmissions, second only to manual transmissions, offering much better fuel efficiency. 

Disadvantages: • Despite numerous advantages, not all cars use CVT transmissions for two reasons: firstly, CVTs are slightly more expensive than traditional automatic transmissions; secondly, if operated improperly, the probability of problems with a CVT transmission is higher. • CVT transmissions inherently have a limitation: the steel belt in the transmission can only withstand a limited amount of power. Generally, power exceeding a 1.8L displacement or 280 N·m is considered its upper limit. However, an increasing number of models are now breaking this limit, and it is believed that the issues with steel belts will gradually be resolved.
